Leaf & Foil Size

Leaf & Foil Size Artisan Enhancements™ Leaf & Foil Size is a water-based sizing medium used in the application of metallic leafing and foils. Formulated with advanced chemistry - Leaf & Foil Size is non-toxic, low VOC, and eco-friendly!

Use: Enhanced formula provides extended open and tack times. Developed for a smooth, easy-to-use application. Leaf & Foil Size can be applied to fully dried painted, stained, and/or sealed nonporous surfaces. Great for a variety of interior projects such as: furniture, cabinetry, decorative arts, ceilings and walls. Coverage: Varies based on application.

Prep: Before getting started, review tip sheets or visit your local retailer for additional instructions. Surfaces should be free of cleaner residue, dust, dirt, and debris. If painting a basecoat, paint should be completely dry before applying Leaf & Foil Size. Porous or untreated surfaces should be sealed a topcoat before applying Leaf & Foil Size. Some painted and glazed surfaces may need to be sealed a topcoat prior to applying to Leaf & Foil Size application. Prepared surfaces should be completely dry before application.

Recommended Application: Stir before use - Do not shake. Lightly mist the surface with water before applying Leaf & Foil Size to the surface. Using an inexpensive chip/detail brush or foam roller lightly, evenly, apply one thin layer of Leaf & Foil Size. Leaf & Foil Size will go on white "milky", but once fully dry should be clear and tacky to touch. Once sizing is dry, apply metallic gilding foil or metallic leafing to the tacky layer of Leaf & Foil Size. If applying leaf, gently and delicately apply metal leaf to tacky surface. If using metallic foils, using a scrub brush or tool, rub foil to ensure adhesion of foil to tacky surface. Gently peel back clear plastic film of foil, revealing the metallic coating transferred to the surface. Proceed to sealing after metallic leaf or foil layer is applied. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F (10°C).

Dry Time: After 45-60 minutes Leaf & Foil Size should be clear, dry, and tacky. Some surfaces and applications may require longer dry times. Do NOT use a heating element to accelerate dry time. Leaf & Foil Size must air dry naturally.

Seal: Surface remains tacky indefinitely if not sealed. Seal metallic surfaces with a topcoat. Refer to the application instructions and cure times in applying the topcoat.

Surface Care: Once sealed and cured, maintain surfaces with a dry or damp soft microfiber cloth. Avoid excessive exposure to moisture. Avoid cleaning with harsh, caustic, or abrasive cleaners.

Clean up & Storage: Use hand sanitizer to remove “tackiness” from hands and fingers. Use rubbing alcohol to remove sizing from tools. After cleaning tools with rubbing alcohol, rinse with warm water to remove any remaining alcohol residue. Storage - seal the container tightly. Do not freeze or expose to direct sunlight/extreme heat. RECYCLE CONTAINERS in accordance with local laws.

Tips & Hints:

  • Leaf & Foil Size works best over dry and sealed surfaces.
  • Leaf & Foil Size can be used with easy release metallic foils and traditional metal leaf.
  • For smooth applications: Leaf & Foil Size can be diluted with 5% water for a smoother brush and sponge application. After the first coat is completely dry and clear, a second coat may be needed for full coverage and tackiness.
  • Roller Application: Use an inexpensive foam or sponge roller to apply Leaf & Foil Size to large surfaces. Apply a thin coat using even linear strokes to avoid lap lines.
